Saturday was mine and Erick’s one year wedding anniversary, so being in NYC, a city without a shortage of restaurants, the obvious choice was to go out and indulge. A friend of Erick’s suggested we try August in the Village as he had been there several times and was thoroughly impressed (it’s also cute because Erick and I were married in the month of August).

We arrived and were immediately impressed. The intimate environment, the distressed walls, the Edison bulbs, the solarium/dining room, it was all so romantic and fitting for our occasion.

I didn’t get a shot of the menu but it is tiny, about two pages and roughly 8 choices of entrées and appetizers on each page tiny. That being said, there is definitely something for everyone.

We had heard the pizza was phenomenal so Erick order the Pizza Napolitana and I ordered the mussels. The pizza was perfect. It was thin, crispy, the sauce was simple and savoury, and the mozzarella was very creamy.

The pizza was good, but the mussels… Oh my god those mussels. They were the best mussels I’ve ever had, and I’ve had mussels fresh out of the sea in Sorrento, Italy. They were cooked in an herby, lemony, buttery sauce with kale and served with crispy bread for dipping. Just go and order these, you will not be disappointed. The mains were equally as delicious. I ordered the roasted chicken with mash and garlic green beans. I know, sounds boring but the dish was much more elevated and complex than it sounds. Erick got the sea scallops which I wasn’t crazy about, but he very much enjoyed.

To top off the night we had to try the rosemary crème brûlée (the two bottles of Sauvignon Blanc didn’t hurt either). Regular crème brûlée is amazing as it is, but when it is kicked up a notch with rosemary and tart Greek yogurt it is just out of this world. I couldn’t even get a picture of it because it was devoured within seconds.

I would highly recommend August, it was my first time but definitely not my last.
